According to Henry being interviewed by Jimmy Fallon 2020 -- there were only 5 made for the show. They have brought as high as ,000 at auction. I purchased one in 1979 at a charity auction and subsequently have signed letters by Henry Winkler verifying it's authenticity. Attached are photos of the Auction listing, letters from Winkler personally signed. All letters, catalog, and jacket come with this auction
I had a relative that worked at NBC and attended Saturday Night Live sitting in the front row on November 20, 1976, and just before Paul Simon came out to do his famous Turkey routine - Henry Winkler walks in the NBC studio and sits down to watch the show... We shook hands and we found out he was going to be the guest host next week.
Move forward to 1979 and there is to be a Celebrity Charity Auction as a Benefit for the Rehabilitation Institute in Mineola NY. I went to the event and bid and won a tie signed by Johnny Carson. I lost a bid the Wedding Dress Catherine Ross wore in the movie The Graduate.
When Fonzie's jacket came up for auction the bidding went crazy --- But I won the bid!
A COA it came with a letter to from Henry Winkler authenticating the jacket in his own hand. A while later my family wrote him a thank you note and He sent back the most delightful letter of appreciation regarding the authenticity which is also attached herein both are part of the sale.
"...Take real good care o my jacket. If it misses me just it have call up. Hearing my voice makes the leather smooth again. Respect is Cool and so are you ! Henry Winklerl"
Do your due diligence and you will see everything is authentic. The Smithsonian has one of the five (one of the most popular exhibits although it is not on display right now because of remodeling. Henry Winkler said he had one of the other 5 was acquired from
“Re-Take Room”, who in turn acquired it directly from Paramount Studios. When the show was cancelled, one of Fonzie’s signature brown leather jackets was gifted to The Smithsonian Institution. An important piece of television history
