With the passing of Jean-Claude Picot this past August the Post-Impressionist era in French landscape painting lost
an icon
. Into the 21st century Picot continued the tradition of French landscape artists from the masters of impressionism to the Fauvists and Post-Impressionists. Picot was known for his brilliantly colored post-impressionist paintings but he also was an accomplished engraver. Picot lived part of the year in the south of France and was inspired by the Cote
d'Azur, it's beaches, hills and boat filled harbors. This piece exemplifies that inspiration. It is a view from the window of his home and studio of the Cote d'Azur and a harbor, a panoramic view so important in his work.
This engraving is titled "Dahlias a la
Boîte
d'Aquarelle" (Dahlias and the Watercolor Box). It is a hand hammered relief in
aluminum signed in the work. This piece is from an edition of 1500 in aluminum plus editions of bronze, pewter and pewter on bronze. It dates to 2001.
Frame measures 16" by 18". Artwork measures 7 1/2" by 10". Piece is in an exceptional presentation of a silver frame and black matting with a complimentary silver mat accent. Has an important shadow effect with engraving secured to black backing.
